A port at the western tip of the Uto Peninsula with stone embankments that remain to this day. Built during the Meiji era under the design of a Dutch engineer, this harbor facility is registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site as part of "Meiji Japan's Industrial Revolution Heritage." The stone embankments and drainage channels running along the sea are preserved nearly as they were originally, with scattered retro buildings such as Urashimaya (浦島屋), a Western-style hall associated with Lafcadio Hearn. The combination of blue sea, stone pavement, and white buildings is picturesque from any angle, and a leisurely stroll through the clear morning light allows you to feel the atmosphere of the bustling port town of yesteryear. There are few shaded areas along the seafront, so a hat is advisable. Stone pavements can be slippery after rain, so watch your footing. Free parking is available, and the early morning hours attract fewer crowds—perfect for sightseeing and photography.
