About this spot

A settlement designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, where thatched-roof magariya farmhouses remain in use as homes to this day. Built in an L-shape, the magariya is an architectural style unique to the Aizu region combining the main house and stable into one structure, carrying on mountain village life that has continued since the Edo period. Since residents actually live in the settlement, it's good manners to tour quietly.

Tips

Accessible by car from the venue at Takatsue-hara. There are both free-to-view areas and paid house tours. Some paths are unpaved, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. From morning through early afternoon, the light is good and the thatched roofs look their most beautiful.
