On Friday, August 14, 2026, the Village of Tanka Hirooka Summer Festival (短歌の里 広丘夏祭り) is held from the street in front of JR Hirooka Station through the Hirooka Station shopping street. From 17:00 to 21:00 the street becomes a pedestrian zone lined with a food stall village and a children's game area. Lanterns inscribed with tanka poems hang from the street lamps, and once the sun sets the lights stretch in a row along the street. These lanterns are made from prize-winning tanka gathered through an open call, carrying on the reason Hirooka is called the Village of Tanka. With taiko drum and brass band performances as well, it is a warm, community-rooted festival that fits perfectly as the close of a day spent exploring Matsumoto Castle and Nakamachi Street.

Tips

The event goes ahead in light rain, but check the organizer's official announcement for whether it will be held in stormy weather. Parking around the venue is limited, so walking from JR Hirooka Station is the surest option. Roads home can be congested after the event ends.

Best time to visit

After sunset, when the lanterns begin to glow, is the most beautiful time of day. It is held from 17:00 to 21:00.
