About this spot

An area in the Hirooka district of northern Shiojiri City. It is home to the Northern Community Center Enterrace (北部交流センター「えんてらす」), which houses the city's Hirooka branch office, and to Oka Junior High School. Hirooka prospered in the Edo period as a post town on the Zenkoji Kaido (善光寺街道・北国西脇往還), and is also known as the Village of Tanka (短歌の里) for the traces left by modern tanka poets. On the day of the summer festival the shopping street becomes a pedestrian zone, lined with food stalls and wrapped in a lively atmosphere. Once you have picked up dinner from a stall, wait for the lanterns on the street lamps to begin glowing.

Tips

About 20 minutes by car from Nakamachi Street (中町通り). Parking space is limited, so arriving early is recommended. It can get crowded during the summer holidays, so allow extra time for the trip.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. The pedestrian zone starts at 17:00, so arriving around that time works out well.
