This JR station, located at Japan's northernmost point, has a monument inside the station building marking ‘Japan's northernmost railway track,’ making it a popular spot for a commemorative photo. The station building also houses a tourist information center, souvenir shops, and restaurants, making it a convenient starting point for sightseeing in Wakkanai. A sign marking the northernmost point is also set up at one end of the platform, letting you feel that you've truly come all the way to the northern land. It's within walking distance of both the North Breakwater Dome (北防波堤ドーム) and Fukukō Market (副港市場), letting you start your day's itinerary smoothly.
