About this spot

Located near Saganoseki Port, this shrine has long been cherished as a deity of maritime safety and warding off misfortune. Part of its main hall is designated a cultural property of Oita Prefecture, and it is known as a symbol of the port town of Saganoseki. It is also known for the unique custom of the ‘octopus-abstinence prayer’ (蛸絶ち祈願), in which visitors offer a picture of an octopus and abstain from eating octopus for a set period, a shrine deeply tied to local life. The summer festival behind tonight's fireworks display is also an event connected to this shrine.

Tips

A few minutes by car from Michi-no-Eki Saganoseki, and within walking distance of Saganoseki Port as well. The shrine grounds can be visited free of charge. On the day of the summer festival, crowds are larger than usual, so an earlier afternoon visit allows for a more relaxed visit.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The shrine grounds have plenty of shade to escape the summer sun.
