About this spot

This roughly 100-meter-tall observation tower stands at the center of Beppu. From the observation deck, a 360-degree panorama unfolds, taking in the blue waters of Beppu Bay (別府湾), the hot spring town with its rising steam, and Mount Tsurumi (鶴見岳) looming behind it. The tower itself is beloved as a symbol of the city, and getting a sense of Beppu's layout from up here first makes it easier to picture how Umi Jigoku (海地獄), Takegawara Onsen (竹瓦温泉), and Hamawaki Onsen (浜脇温泉) at night all relate to one another as you explore. On clear days you can even see as far as the mountains of Shikoku, making it a perfect first shot for your trip.

Tips

Within walking distance of Beppu Station. An admission fee is required for the observation deck. Daytime sunlight is strong in summer, so a hat is a good idea on the deck.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Clear afternoon air makes it easier to see far into the distance.
