About this spot

A museum standing on the edge of Sayama-ike, one of Japan's oldest reservoirs, designed by architect Tadao Ando. It presents Sayama-ike's roughly 1,400-year history and the wisdom behind flood control and water management through easy-to-understand exhibits, including an impressive display of an actual cross-section of the embankment. The building itself, combining concrete and water, is also one of the highlights. Admission is free, and the cool interior makes it a perfect way to spend a summer morning taking your time to look around.

Tips

Adjacent to Sayama-ike Park, and within walking distance of Osaka-Sayama-shi Station on the Nankai Koya Line if traveling by train. Some areas inside allow photography while others don't, so check the signage. The museum has closing days, so it's a good idea to check in advance.
