About this spot

A historic site founded in the early Edo period by the Okayama domain, known as Japan's oldest school for commoners. Its lecture hall, with its beautiful Bizen-ware tile roof, is designated a National Treasure, and together with the magnificent stone wall surrounding it, conveys the dignity of this place of learning to this day. The lush grounds also include a museum where you can learn about education at the time. Walking among the buildings nestled in this quiet mountain setting feels like stepping back into the Edo period.

Tips

About 10 minutes by car from JR Yoshinaga Station. Touring is mainly outdoors around the historic site, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Some areas have little shade in summer, so don't forget a hat and to stay hydrated.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours needed. Mornings through midday see fewer tourists, allowing for a quiet visit
