Visit an Edo-era school designated as a National Treasure
About this spot
A historic site founded by the Okayama domain in the early Edo period, known as Japan's oldest school for common people. The main hall with its beautiful Bizen-ware tiled roof is designated a National Treasure, and the impressive stone walls surrounding it convey the dignity of the learning spaces of that era. There is also a museum on the spacious grounds where you can learn about education at that time. Walking around the buildings nestled in the quiet mountains makes you feel as if you've traveled back to the Edo period.
