About this spot

A rural mountain hamlet spread across a plateau about 300 meters above sea level, where thatched-roof farmhouses and terraced rice paddies still remain today. With scenery that looks as if the old farming way of life has been preserved just as it was, this spot draws many visitors seeking a glimpse of quintessential old Japan. Small temples and historic sites are also dotted throughout the hamlet, and simply strolling around slowly is enough to calm the mind. The cool plateau breeze is also a welcome touch on a summer afternoon.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from the former Shizutani School, via mountain roads, so drive carefully. Restrooms and shops are limited, so it's reassuring to take care of those beforehand.
