Next stop: Food exploration through the arcade with fried chicken and Taiwanese sweets in handAbout this spot
A beloved symbol of Osu and a prestigious temple, sometimes counted as one of Japan's three great Kannon temples. The striking vermillion main hall is impressive, and the groups of pigeons gathering on the stone-paved grounds make for classic Osu-style photos at this popular spot. The Osu Library on the grounds houses valuable classical texts, including the oldest known manuscript of the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters). The shopping street arcade extends directly from in front of the temple, making it an ideal gateway to the afternoon's food exploration.
Tips
Directly accessible from Subway Osu Kannon Station. The temple grounds are not large, so allow approximately 30-45 minutes for prayer and photos. Many visitors enjoy feeding the pigeons, but bring your purchased food outside the grounds to avoid having it snatched by pigeons.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. The vermillion main hall looks particularly vibrant in the afternoon light.
