The town of Masuda, which flourished as a commercial center since the Edo period, still retains a unique culture of constructing grand earth-walled storehouses called 'uchigura' deep within merchant houses. The townscape, selected as the country's Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, is a precious landscape packed with wisdom unique to heavy snow regions. Some of the interior storehouses can be toured, and you'll be captivated by the lacquered beams and elaborate craftsmanship. Simply walking through the historic town conveys the lifestyle of merchants from long ago.
Tips
About 15 minutes by car from Michi-no-Eki Gannosato Sennan. Visiting hours and admission fees for interior storehouses vary by facility, so advance confirmation is recommended. In summer, the sun is strong, so a hat is comfortable.

Takes about 2 hours. In the soft afternoon light, the heavy earth-walled storehouse walls appear more striking
