About this spot

Sekijuku, the 47th of the fifty-three post towns along the Tokaido, flourished as a station town and is now a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Along a stretch of about 1.8 km, merchant houses from the Edo to Meiji periods stand side by side, conveying the bustle of the old post town just as it was. Scattered throughout the townscape are candy shops, souvenir stores, and Japanese confectionery shops, so you can enjoy snacking as you walk. Before the evening fireworks, take a leisurely walk through the post town and imagine yourself as a traveler from the Edo period.

Tips

Walking from Higashi-no-Oiwake, just steps from JR Seki Station, to Nishi-no-Oiwake in the west lets you get a full sense of the post town. The summer sun can be strong, so it is a good idea to stroll while choosing shaded spots. Restrooms are located near the tourist information center in the middle of the townscape.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. Early afternoon has fewer tourists, making it easier to walk around
