About this spot

The ruins of a castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a base for his campaigns in Korea, said to have been second in scale only to Osaka Castle (大坂城) at the time. Although no buildings remain today, the grand stone walls spreading across the hilltop overlooking the Genkai Sea (玄界灘) speak to its former scale. At the adjoining Saga Prefectural Nagoya Castle Museum (佐賀県立名護屋城博物館), you can learn about the historical background of the era through easy-to-understand exhibits, and admission is free. Its convenient location, close to the fireworks venue at Hadomisaki (波戸岬), also means you can move seamlessly from a historical walk to the seaside over the course of the day.

Tips

The castle ruins have uneven terrain, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The museum has free admission and is air-conditioned, making it a great place to rest during the hottest hours. Ample parking is available in front of the museum.

Best time to visit

About 1.5 hours. We recommend cooling off in the museum while also walking the castle ruins.
