Observe the Unique Sight of Japanese Macaques Soaking in Hot Springs

About this spot

Located in the Yunokawa Onsen hot spring town, this botanical garden features Japanese macaques soaking in the "Monkey Mountain Hot Spring" fed by the natural hot springs. While not as common as in winter, the sight of monkeys enjoying warm baths in summer is quite humorous and very popular with children. Inside the greenhouse, you can also observe tropical plants and enjoy some time in a cool indoor environment.

函館の奥座敷として知られる湯の川温泉街で開催される、61回の歴史を誇る花火大会です。松倉川の河口付近から19時に約3,000発の花火が打ち上がり、温泉旅館の灯りと花火の光が重なり合う情緒あふれる夜景をつくり出します。温泉街ならではの落ち着いた雰囲気で花火を楽しめるのが魅力です。

Tips

荒天時は中止または延期となる場合があるため、当日は函館市の公式発表で確認を。終了後は温泉街周辺が混み合うため、少し時間を置いてから移動するのがおすすめです。

Tips

About 10 minutes' walk from Yunokawa (湯の川) tram stop on the Hakodate City Tram. Monkeys don't enter the bath at fixed times, so if you observe for a while, you may catch the moment they enter. Since there are outdoor areas in the garden, bring sun protection.
