Okute-juku on the Nakasendo (中山道 大湫宿)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This is a historic townscape that flourished as a post town on the Nakasendo highway during the Edo period. In this quiet mountain hamlet, remnants of the old honjin (main inn) site and old houses that retain the atmosphere of the era are scattered about, letting you feel the air of the time when travelers passed through. Before the lively Tanabata festival, this is the perfect spot to spend a relaxed moment on a quiet historical stroll.

Tips

About 20 minutes by car from the Mizunami Ceramics Museum. Drive carefully, as the route passes through mountain roads. There are many insects in summer, so bring insect repellent.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes needed. Afternoon, when the shade feels pleasant, is recommended
