About this spot

This is a representative old temple of Kasaoka City, known as the place where Ryokan (良寛), an Edo-period Zen monk, is said to have trained in his youth. Built partway up a mountain, its grounds are lush and green, growing quieter with each step up the stone stairway. Materials related to Ryokan and poetry monuments are scattered throughout, making it a spot where you can experience history and nature together. It's a perfect place to spend a slightly calmer time before the lively festival.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from the Kabutogani Museum. There are stone stairs, so wear comfortable, easy-to-walk-in shoes.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The tree-lined grounds stay cool even in summer
