About this spot

Just a short walk from JR Kasaoka Station, this is the arcade-covered shopping street of the Higashi-Honmachi (東本町) district. Nostalgic storefronts remain, and the old-fashioned atmosphere runs so deep that the shopkeepers proudly say, this is the darkest shopping arcade in Japan. In the Edo period, passing through this alley led to a port where Kitamaebune (北前船) trading ships called in, and outside the arcade you'll find retro, nostalgic buildings scattered about. Walking while tracing the port town's history will build your excitement ahead of the fireworks display. It's a good amount of time for a stroll before the festival.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from Entsuji Temple. It gets crowded from evening onward on the day of the fireworks display, so it's recommended to enjoy it leisurely at this time instead.

About 1 hour 15 minutes. The calm afternoon hours are good for a leisurely walk through the shopping street
