This is the center of Yunotsu Onsen, which flourished as the port for shipping silver from the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, a World Heritage Site. Inns and shops with reddish-brown Sekishu-tile roofs line both sides of the narrow alleys, creating a retro atmosphere as if time has stopped. Selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, the townscape lets you feel the air of an old hot spring resort just by walking through it. Since the area gradually grows livelier from the daytime on the day of the fireworks display, it's recommended to enjoy your walk in the early afternoon before it gets crowded.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from Yunotsu Station on the San'in Main Line. The townscape is compact with mostly flat paths, making it easy to walk with family. The summer sun is strong, so a parasol or hat is reassuring. The path to Ryugozen Shrine next continues up a gentle slope.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour needed. There are fewer tourists in the early afternoon, making for a relaxed walk.
