About this spot

This roughly 800-meter townscape flourished as both the outer port of Iwami Ginzan and a hot spring town. It's the only hot spring town in Japan selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. Along the street cut through a narrow valley stand townhouses from the late Edo period through the early Showa era, with shipping merchants' houses closer to the harbor and hot spring inns and bathhouses further inland. On summer festival evenings, food stalls line the street and it fills with locals. Take in the view of the inlet along the harbor while having dinner, then secure your spot for the fireworks.

Tips

About a 15-minute walk from the Yunotsu Pottery Museum. The area around the harbor gets crowded from evening onward on the day of the fireworks display, so it's recommended to secure your spot early. In addition to food stalls, it's reassuring to pick up food and drinks in the hot spring town beforehand. Check restroom locations early too.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes needed. The time as the sunset colors shift into night is a highlight.
