About this spot

An ancient shrine cherished by the people of Kozushima as the island's guardian shrine. Though just a short walk from the village, its grounds are enveloped in a quiet atmosphere, surrounded by trees. With a history as a shikinaisha (a shrine listed in the ancient Engishiki register), it is also a place that carries on the everyday life and faith of island residents to this day. Give thanks quietly for a safe voyage and the island time ahead of you. The compact grounds also make it a perfect stroll for easing your body into island life right after arriving.

Tips

Within walking distance through the village from the harbor. Visiting is free. Sunlight is strong during the day and some stretches of the path to the shrine have little shade, so a hat or parasol is reassuring to have. Move on to the next stop, the Akasaki Promenade, on foot or by island bus.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes needed. Easier walking in the early afternoon once the sunlight softens a little
