Next stop: Taking in the crater of Mount Mihara, the island's symbol, up closeAbout this spot
This shrine has long been cherished by islanders as the guardian shrine of the Motomachi district. Though close to the port, its grounds are surrounded by trees and wrapped in a quiet atmosphere. As a place that carries on Izu Oshima's history and faith to this day, it's a fitting spot to give thanks for arriving on the island and to pray for a safe day ahead. Climb the stone steps to find a small shrine hall where you can quietly pay your respects.
Tips
Within walking distance of Motomachi Port. Visiting is free. The sun can be strong during the day, so a hat is reassuring on the way to the grounds. From here, you'll travel to Mount Mihara next by local bus or rental car.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. It's best to stop by in the early afternoon after arriving at the port.
