Next stop: Walking a palm-lined path and cooling off with seaside sceneryAbout this spot
This active volcano rises at the center of Izu Oshima and stands as the island's symbol. From the viewpoint around Goshinka Teahouse, you can look out over the land covered in dark lava and the rugged crater up close. This dynamic scenery, unique to a volcanic island, offers a sense of impact you won't find at other sightseeing spots. Walking paths are also maintained in the surrounding area, so if you have time, a stroll is worth it too. In the summer sun, this becomes a moment to feel the island's origins firsthand.
Tips
About a 30-minute bus ride from Motomachi Port. There's little shade around the crater, so sunscreen and a hat are essential. The ground underfoot is rocky with volcanic gravel, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Next, you'll travel to Sunset Palm Line by bus or car.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 45 minutes. Afternoon light shows off the texture of the volcanic ash landscape well.
