About this spot

The ruins of the castle of the Sagara clan, lords of the Hitoyoshi domain, built along the Kuma River, where part of the stone walls and moat still remain today. With many highlights including the rare overhanging stone wall (haneide-ishigaki), the site is maintained as a park that can be enjoyed even by those who are not history buffs. From the castle ruins you can also see the flow of the Kuma River, and it is recommended to take in the river view during the day before the fireworks light it up at night. The Hitoyoshi Castle History Museum also displays excavated artifacts.

Tips

Accessible on foot or by car from Aoi Aso Shrine. Admission to the park is free (the history museum may charge a fee). In summer some areas offer little shade, so remember to stay hydrated. Drive to Hitoyoshi roadside station next.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. The afternoon light makes the flow of the Kuma River look especially beautiful.
