Feel the History of the Castle Town Through Stone Walls and Moats Spreading Along the Kumakawa River

About this spot

The ruins of the residence of the Sagara clan of Hitoyoshi Domain, built along the Kumakawa River, with parts of the stone walls and moats still remaining. There are many points of interest including the rare "jutting stone wall," and the site is developed as a park that can be enjoyed even by those who are not history enthusiasts. From the castle ruins you can also gaze upon the flow of the Kumakawa River, and it's recommended to view the river scenery where the fireworks will light up at night during the daytime. The Hitoyoshi Castle History Museum also displays excavated artifacts.

2026年8月15日(土)開催、71回の歴史を誇る人吉花火大会です。球磨川河川敷中川原公園一帯から打ち上がる約5,000発の花火は、球磨川の川面に映り込みながら夜空を彩ります。城下町の歴史を感じながら過ごした1日の締めくくりにふさわしく、地域の人々が集うこの花火大会は人吉の夏を代表する行事として長年親しまれてきました。夜風とともに、家族で川辺の花火を心ゆくまで楽しみましょう。

Tips

荒天時は中止や延期になる場合があるため、当日の開催可否は市の公式発表で確認を。終了後は周辺道路が混み合うため、フィナーレの余韻を楽しんでから時間差での移動がおすすめです。足元が暗いのでスマホのライトで安全に。

Tips

You can move on foot or by car from Aoi Aso Shrine. Admission is free (the history museum may have an admission fee). In summer there are areas with little shade, so don't forget to hydrate. Move to the next Michi no Eki Hitoyoshi by car.
