This temple, connected to a warrior who served Minamoto no Yoritomo, has on its grounds a giant Chinese juniper tree, a nationally designated natural monument said to be over 800 years old. Its sky-covering branches are truly impressive, and the sheer presence of a tree that has lived through so many centuries is enough to stop you in your tracks. The grounds are quiet, with a fine view from the stone steps, offering a chance to feel the power of nature amid your stroll through the hot spring town.
Tips
About 15 minutes on foot from Goso Shrine. There are stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Admission to the grounds is free. Next, walk back to the shopping street in the Yugawara Onsen district.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes needed. The soft light just before evening beautifully illuminates the giant tree
