About this spot

Standing beside the Naka River, this shrine is a storied ancient site, said to be both the origin shrine of Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide and the birthplace of the Sumiyoshi Sanjin deities. Legend holds that Empress Jingu enshrined the local deity here during her conquest of the Three Han states, deeply connecting the shrine to the area's history. The grounds sit in a quiet setting along the river, and simply walking the approach path surrounded by trees is enough to bring a sense of calm. Before the summer festival, spend a moment connecting with the very beginning of Nakagawa City's history.

Tips

About 10 minutes by car from JR Hakata-Minami Station. Worship is free. The grounds are compact, making them easy to explore even in a short time. It's about a 10-minute drive to the next stop, Sakuta no Une.
