About this spot

One of the provincial temples built across the country by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu in the Nara period, this temple is said to have flourished as the provincial temple of Buzen Province. Foundation stones still remain in the grounds, marking where a seven-story pagoda is said to have once stood, letting visitors picture the temple's former grandeur. Today's main hall has a quiet, dignified presence and remains cherished by the local community as a place of worship. It's a fitting place to begin the day and feel the depth of Miyako Town's history.

Tips

About a 10-minute drive from Sun Great Miyako. Admission is free. The foundation stones remain in a corner of the grounds, so use the signboards to help find them. It's about a 10-minute drive to the next stop, Ayazuka Kofun.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. Early afternoon, when it's quiet, is ideal for visiting.
