One of the largest of the burial mounds scattered across Miyako Town, this round tumulus is a rare spot where you can actually step inside its horizontal stone burial chamber. Built from massive stacked stones, the chamber is an awe-inspiring space that speaks to the skill of ancient builders. The cool air inside also offers welcome relief from the summer heat. Paired with Buzen Kokubunji, it makes for a perfect walk tracing Miyako Town's ancient history.
Tips
About a 10-minute drive from Buzen Kokubunji. The footing inside the stone chamber can be uneven, so comfortable shoes and a flashlight are reassuring to have. It's about a 10-minute drive to the next stop, Sun Great Miyako.
Best time to visit
About 30 minutes. Visiting during the bright daytime hours is recommended, as it makes the inside of the chamber easier to see.
