About this spot

This is a Class 1 fishing port in Shimo-Utagaura, Shikamachi Town, designated as a fishing port in 1969 (Showa 44). Belonging to the Kujukushima Fisheries Cooperative (九十九島漁業協同組合), it is active with purse-seine and gillnet fishing as well as single-line angling, along with aquaculture — tiger pufferfish and pearls are raised in these waters. Against the calm backdrop of the western sea, the sight of fishing boats coming and going is a peaceful scene that directly reflects the daily lives of local residents. There are no flashy tourist facilities, but walking along the harbor amid the scent of the tide and the sea breeze makes for a pleasant time to spend leisurely with family.

Tips

About a 10-minute drive from Shikamachi Onsen Yasuragikan (鹿町温泉やすらぎ館). Please be considerate of fishing workers so as not to interfere with their work while visiting. It's about a 15-minute drive to the next stop, Senryugataki Park (潜竜ケ滝公園).

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. In the calm afternoon hours, the sea view looks especially tranquil.
