A UNESCO World Heritage Zen temple that originated as a villa built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. Tips

It is about 10–15 minutes by bus from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. During summer, some of the walking paths have little shade, so stay hydrated while viewing. Admission is required.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. The soft morning light beautifully illuminates the Golden Pavilion and the pond's surface.
