An ancient shrine said to have been transferred from Nara when the imperial capital moved to Heian-kyō. It is nationally known as a cherry blossom viewing spot. In summer, the green of the cherry trees that remain covers the shrine grounds coolly, allowing you to enjoy your visit in peaceful tranquility. Due to its convenient location within walking distance of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, many pilgrims visit both shrines together. The shrine grounds are planted with many varieties of cherry trees, and knowing the highlights for each season adds to the enjoyment of future visits.

学問の神様・菅原道真公を祀る北野天満宮で、2026年は8月1日(土)から16日(日)まで御手洗祭・北野七夕祭が開かれます。境内は9時30分から20時まで開かれ、七夕飾りや神事が行われるほか、夕方16時からは境内が幻想的にライトアップされる北野夏祭りも見どころです。朝は静かな朝参りとして、夜はライトアップと夏祭りの賑わいとして、一日のうちに二つの異なる表情を楽しめるのがこの祭りの魅力です。上七軒での食べ歩きを終えたら、灯りのともる境内へ戻ってきましょう。

Tips

朝の参拝は比較的すいており、涼しい時間帯にゆっくりお参りできます。夜のライトアップの時間帯は参拝客で賑わうため、余裕を持って訪れましょう。荒天時のライトアップ実施可否は事前に確認を。

Tips

It is conveniently located about 10 minutes on foot from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Admission is free, and the grounds are not particularly large, making it easy to explore even in a short time.
