Tanabata Festival with 9:30 AM Opening and Illumination from 4 PM
About this spot
At Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the deity of learning, the Mitarashi Festival & Kitano Tanabata Festival will be held from August 1st (Saturday) to 16th (Sunday) in 2026. The shrine grounds are open from 9:30 AM to 8 PM, with tanabata decorations and religious ceremonies performed, and from 4 PM, the Kitano summer festival features illuminated grounds that are also a highlight. The charm of this festival lies in experiencing two contrasting atmospheres within a single day—a quiet morning pilgrimage and the evening's illumination with summer festival activities. After enjoying street food at Kamishichiken, return to the illuminated shrine grounds.
