According to tradition, this ancient shrine was founded in the first year of the Jinki era (724 CE) by the district official Mibu no Harunari after receiving a divine oracle, at a site where a thousand chestnut trees grew. From the medieval period onward it was known as the ichinomiya (leading shrine) of Hizen Province. The approach continues up 146 stone steps, and at the top the grounds include the Okayu-do hall, Takeo Shrine, and Hatomori Inari Shrine. Every March the shrine holds Okayu Dameshi, one of Japan's three great porridge-divination festivals. It is a place worth exploring slowly before and after paying your respects.
Tips
The approach has 146 stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Do not forget a hat and something to drink when visiting in summer.

About 40 minutes. A stroll is recommended when the sunlight has eased a little.
