Chirikuhachimangu Shrine stands on a hilltop overlooking the Chikugo Plain and holds this traditional event every year on August 1. By passing through a large ring woven from reeds set up on the shrine grounds, visitors cleanse away the sins and impurities unknowingly accumulated over the past half year and pray for good health in the half year ahead. In 2026 the rites begin at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, and the shrine can be visited throughout the day. At this shrine with a long history, it is a precious opportunity to experience a summer purification tradition rooted in the local community.

Since the shrine sits on a hilltop, there are stairs and slopes leading up to the grounds, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Sunlight is strong during summer days, so remember to stay hydrated when visiting.

Best time to visit

The 7:00 a.m. start of the rites is the main highlight, but the chinowa-kuguri ritual can be visited throughout the day.
