Flow of the course

About this spot

This ancient temple sits halfway up Mount Futago (両子山) in the center of the Kunisaki Peninsula, known as the central temple of 《Rokugo Manzan》 (六郷満山), the unique Buddhist culture that flourished on the peninsula. The grounds feature Nio guardian statues and moss-covered stone steps, creating scenery that conveys a long history, and the deep surrounding greenery brings a pleasant stillness. It's a fitting starting point for exploring the region's history and experiencing the fusion of Buddhism and Shinto unique to the Kunisaki Peninsula. Even in summer, the tree shade keeps the grounds cool, making it easy to visit.

Tips

The grounds have many stone steps and slopes, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Since it's in the mountains, there can be a lot of insects, so insect repellent is reassuring to have.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Early afternoon tends to be relatively quiet for visiting.
