Vendor stalls fill the shrine grounds at Sumiyoshi Festival, Osaka's celebrated summer festival finale

About this spot

Sumiyoshi Taisha's grandest festival, known as "Osaka's summer festival finale," runs July 30–August 1, 2026. The festival atmosphere peaks on July 30, with the evening celebration (Yoimiya-sai) beginning at 4 p.m., as vendor stalls line the shrine grounds. July 31–August 1 feature the grand festival ceremony at the main hall followed by a sacred procession carrying portable shrines from Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社) to Shokuin Tongu (宿院頓宮) in Sakai City, an event of major scale and significance in Osaka. As a summer purification ritual, families gather to pray for the health and well-being of loved ones during this over-1,000-year-old tradition.
