About this spot

Often called the grand finale of Osaka's summer festivals, this is Sumiyoshi Taisha's largest festival, held from Thursday, July 30 to Saturday, August 1, 2026. On the first day, the 30th, the festival opens with the Yoimiya Festival starting at 4 p.m.; on the 31st and August 1st, around 25 food stalls line the south front of the shrine grounds from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. On the 31st, the Natsukoshi-no-harae purification rite is followed by the Reitaisai main festival rite, and on August 1, the Tonguu Festival (頓宮祭) is held at Shukuin Tonguu (宿院頓宮) in Sakai City, making this one of Osaka's largest summer festivals. It also carries the meaning of a midsummer purification rite, drawing worshippers who pray for their families' health and safety, filling the shrine grounds with lively crowds.

Tips

The shrine grounds are large and the food stall areas are spread out, so it is a good idea to check the location of restrooms in advance. Nearby roads may become congested or restricted, so public transportation is recommended. After sunset around 6 p.m., the lantern light becomes even more beautiful.
