About this spot
The Onpara Matsuri is held at Tsunakoshi Shrine (綱越神社), a subsidiary shrine of Omiwa Shrine, from Thursday, July 30 to Saturday, August 1, 2026. It opens on the first day, the 30th, with the Yoimiya Festival starting at 4 p.m. Carrying the meaning of a midsummer purification rite, this festival is a beloved summer tradition in Miwa, purifying the impurities of the first half of the year and praying for good health for the remaining half. The following day, the 31st, features the Annual Festival (Reisai) from 10 a.m., including a sacred horse procession and passing through a chinowa, a sacred ring of woven grass, followed by a dedicated fireworks display lighting up the night sky from 7:30 p.m. The shrine grounds remain lively with worshippers through the closing festival (Kouensai) on August 1.
