A venerable shrine founded by Date Masamune, with a main hall designated as a national treasure. The Momoyama-style shrine building, decorated with black lacquer and brilliantly painted sculptures, is known as a structure that conveys the finest of Date culture, comparable to Zuihouden. The grounds, surrounded by Japanese cedar trees, maintain a peaceful quiet despite being in the city, and the tree-lined approach is ideal for taking a summer rest. As Sendai's principal shrine, it has long been beloved by locals and offers a calm place to worship even during the tanabata festival period.

仙台の夏を彩る東北三大祭りのひとつで、2026年は8月6日から8日までの3日間開催されます。中心部の商店街アーケード通りを中心に、色とりどりの和紙と吹き流しで飾られた巨大な七夕飾りが頭上いっぱいに掲げられ、通りを歩くだけで祭りの華やかさを体感できます。仙台七夕まつりは仙台市の中心市街地一帯を舞台に、江戸時代から続く伝統と現代の装飾が融合した独特の光景を作り出します。初日から多くの人出でにぎわい、夜には飾りに灯りがともり、昼とはまた違った幻想的な雰囲気に包まれます。
Tips
初日・週末は非常に混雑するため、ベビーカーでの移動は人の少ない通りを選ぶのが安心です。アーケード内は屋根があるので小雨でも楽しめますが、蒸し暑さがこもりやすいので飲み物は多めに。周辺は交通規制がかかることがあるので、公共交通機関の利用がおすすめです。
Tips
From Sendai Castle Ruins or Zuihouden, bus or taxi travel is smooth. Since the grounds have stone steps, wear comfortable walking shoes. As the shrine building is a national treasure, please observe proper etiquette and pray quietly during your visit.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. The afternoon shade is cool and makes worship comfortable.
