The 2026 Jantokoi Uozu Festival runs for three days from August 7-9, with Suwa Shrine and the surrounding harbor town as the venue. At the event, towering illuminated structures called 'Tatemon'—triangular wooden frames decorated with approximately 80 lanterns each—appear on the scene. Young people carry and spin them while shouting spirited chants as they parade through the streets. The glow of countless lanterns illuminates the harbor town's night sky, and their reflection on the water surface is absolutely magical. A summer festival representing the region that conveys the spirit of the people of Uozu, who have lived alongside the sea.

Tips

The area gets crowded with spectators at night, and vehicle traffic restrictions may be in place. Check public transportation and nearby parking information beforehand for peace of mind. The harbor area can be dark in places, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

Best time to visit

After 5 PM. The period around 7 PM, after sunset when the lanterns are fully lit, offers the best views.
