Held on August 16, 2026, along the banks of the Senbo River flowing through Takaoka, the Lantern Floating Festival is a traditional event that quietly sends off the spirits of ancestors who returned during Obon, together with the light of lanterns. As night falls, countless lanterns bearing family names and wishes are released onto the water, drifting downstream as their lights sway gently. Carrying a quiet, solemn atmosphere quite different from fireworks or taiko drums, the festival gives a deep sense of summer coming to an end. The band of light spreading across the nighttime river surface is a fitting sight to close out summer in Takaoka.

Tips

The riverbank gets dark underfoot at night, so bringing a flashlight or your smartphone's light is a good idea. It's also a season with a lot of insects, so be sure to take insect-repellent measures. If you'd like to float a lantern yourself, check the reception procedure at the venue.

Best time to visit

Plan around the event hours of 19:30-21:00. Since it takes place after sunset, the lantern lights stand out all the more.
