About this spot

The 2026 Yamaguchi Tanabata Lantern Festival takes place over 2 days (August 6-7) in Yamaguchi City's central shopping street and Parkroad area. The round orange "Yamaguchi lanterns" unique to Yamaguchi are hung abundantly along the streets, and the sight of them swaying together with Tanabata bamboo decorations is a summer symbol unique to this town conveying the aroma of Ouchi culture. As night deepens, families in yukata and young people fill the streets, and the entire town is enveloped in fantastical light. The first day you'll visit in this course is also a day to experience the excitement of the festival's grand opening.

Tips

After the evening, traffic restrictions may be in effect around the venue, so using public transportation is recommended. The shopping street is crowded with pedestrians, and moving with a stroller is somewhat challenging, so a baby carrier makes it easier to move around.

Best time to visit

From around 5 PM when the lights turn on. Most fantastical time is after 6 PM when the sun sets and lantern lights come on.
