About this spot

Nakatsugawa-juku (中津川宿), which flourished as one of the sixty-nine post towns along the Nakasendo highway, still retains old townhouses with 'udatsu' — decorative firewalls that mark prosperous merchant homes. Walking the street lined with lattice doors and white-walled buildings feels a bit like stepping back into the shoes of an Edo-period traveler. Long-established Japanese confectionery shops are dotted along the way, making this a pleasant walking route for soaking up the area's distinctive townscape.

Tips

Reached by car from the Naegi Toyama Historical Museum. The townscape is mostly flat and easy to walk, but there is little shade in summer, so a hat is a good idea.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. As evening approaches, the sunlight softens and walking becomes more comfortable
