About this spot

This is a feudal lord's garden built during the Edo period, counted alongside Kairakuen in Mito and Kenrokuen in Kanazawa as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. The scenery formed by its spacious lawns, ponds, and artificial hills is pleasant to walk through on a grand scale. The view of Okayama Castle from within the garden is also a highlight, letting you naturally sense its relationship to the festival venue you will visit next.

Tips

Just across the bridge over the Asahi River from Okayama Castle. An admission fee is required. Some sections of the spacious grounds have little shade, so bring a hat and something to drink in summer.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Relatively uncrowded and easy to stroll around in the early afternoon.
