About this spot

The Shiraishi Odori is a bon dance said to have originated as a memorial for the warriors who died in the Genpei War, and it is designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. In 2026 it is held over four consecutive nights from August 13th to 16th (in front of Shiraishi Community Hall on the 13th through 15th, and at Shiraishi Island Beach on the 16th), and is characterized by graceful choreography danced at a leisurely pace to drums and ondo singing. Dancers form circle after circle, and the sight of them dancing through the night under moonlight and lantern glow is a summer tradition that unites the whole island. Rather than just watching, it's also recommended to mimic the hand movements from outside the circle and join in the dance yourself. On this opening night, you can experience the islanders' excitement up close in a special moment.
