About this spot
Morioka Sansa Odori is one of northeastern Japan's premier summer festivals, originating from folklore about demon-slaying. The 2026 festival runs from August 1-4 along the performance course centered on Central Street and Iwate Prefectural Government. Recognized by Guinness World Records for the highest number of simultaneous drums, the festival features groups striking their drums while enthusiastically chanting "Sakkora, Chaguchagu." The beautiful formations of yukata-clad dancers and the thunderous sound of drums create spectacle unmatched among northeastern summer festivals. Many groups include children, making it an open, family-friendly atmosphere.
