About this spot

The Hanamaki Festival boasts over 300 years of history and is one of the largest autumn festivals in Iwate Prefecture. In 2026, it will be held over three days, from September 11 to 13, centered on Kamimachi through Omatsuri Plaza in the heart of Hanamaki City. Elaborately decorated floats adorned with vividly colored carvings and lavish figures parade through the streets, and the sight of spirited Shishi-odori (deer dance), portable shrines, and local performing arts appearing one after another is spectacular. At the neighboring Hanamaki Central Plaza, a food-stall village runs from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., where you can savor the festival's excitement while eating your way through local treats.

Tips

Traffic restrictions may be in place around the venue after dark, so public transportation is recommended. Since many food stalls are cash-only, it's a good idea to bring some coins. Please check the organizer's announcements in case of severe weather.
