With the Great Torii Gate floating in the sea as the stage, sacred boats (goza-bune) playing classical court music traverse between the Jigomae Shrine and the main shrine, creating an enchanting scene with lanterns and bonfires illuminating the evening sea and classical court music filling the air. In 2026, the ritual takes place on Thursday, July 30, from around 3 PM until around 11 PM, timed with high tide. Spectators typically view the ceremony from the Itsukushima Shrine's corridors, around the Great Torii Gate, or from the opposite shore—the moment the sacred boat passes under the Great Torii Gate is the festival's highlight.
