About this spot

This is Miyajima's liveliest street, packed with souvenir shops and eateries, running from Miyajima Pier toward Itsukushima Shrine. You can enjoy a stroll sampling Miyajima specialties like anago meshi (conger eel rice), grilled oysters, and deep-fried momiji manju, making it the perfect place to have an early dinner before the evening Kangensai Festival. At night the street becomes extremely crowded with festival crowds, so finishing your meal and souvenir shopping while it is still light will make it much easier to enjoy the festival afterward. Simply walking along the street lined with wooden townhouses lets you soak in Miyajima's distinctive atmosphere.

Tips

On the day of the Kangensai Festival, the entire street becomes extremely crowded from the evening onward. It is safer to finish dinner by around 3:00 p.m. Popular anago meshi restaurants are almost certain to have lines, so aim for a slightly earlier time.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. Early afternoon, before the festival gets into full swing, tends to be relatively smooth.
