A magnificent Miyaji ritual where men compete for the sacred jewel on the sea

About this spot

Staged in the waters offshore from Itsukushima Shrine's great torii gate, this is one of Miyaji's most spectacular rituals, where bare-chested men fiercely compete for a sacred jewel (tama) thrown into the sea. Men in small boats kick up spray as they pursue the jewel, and legend says whoever obtains it receives a year of good fortune. The approach watching the sea-based competition becomes festival atmosphere, filled with drum sounds and spectators' cheers, as the shrine visited during the day transforms into completely different fervent energy by night. Cherished as a traditional Miyaji festival marking summer's end, it remains deeply rooted in local culture.

Tips

The shrine's corridors and seaside approach are traditional viewing spots. Arriving early to secure a good position is recommended as it becomes crowded from evening onward. Bring a flashlight as footing becomes dark at night.

Best time to visit

Starting at 5 p.m. The competition for the jewel reaches its peak about an hour after opening, providing the best viewing.
