The Suenari Festival, a religious ceremony of Tomiyoshi Takehaya Shrine and Yatsurugi Shrine held for over 400 years, is a venerable summer festival designated as a nationally Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. In 2026 it is held on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, and this course visits the first day. As night falls, lantern-decorated dashi boats move slowly along the Kanie River, and countless lights reflected on the water's surface create a mystical scene. It is a precious opportunity for families to take their time watching a form of festival unique to the water towns of the Kiso Three Rivers basin. Whether food stalls are present varies by year, so on this day it is recommended to quietly savor the atmosphere of the river festival, recalling the dinner you already had beforehand.

Viewing space along the river is limited, so claiming a spot early is reassuring. It gets dark underfoot at night, so a flashlight or smartphone light is reassuring. Traffic restrictions may be in effect in the area, so public transportation or walking is recommended.

Best time to visit

From the 5:00 p.m. arrival. After 7:00 p.m., once it is fully dark and the boats' lanterns stand out, is when the festival is most worth seeing.
